That's right...that's a green car you're looking at.

Here at SMCU, we know that when you buy “green”, it impacts our community and environmental resources in a positive way. That's why we offer rate discounts on hybrid-electric, gas or diesel-powered automobiles that meet EPA "green" requirements.

Why, you ask? It's not because others are doing it, we simply believe it's the right thing to do. It's the 7th Principle by which we do businsess.

Eco-friendly autos certainly improve our environment, but did you know that you can create a similar impact and receive a discount on top of it when you purchase a "green" home or plan "green" home improvements? Our Green Loans program makes those a reality.

 

*SPECIAL NOTICE* - Green Auto Sales Tax Exemption

From January 1, 2009 through December 31 2010, according to the Washington State Department of Revenue, people who purchase or lease either new vehicles that use clean alternative fuels or new high gas mileage hybrid vehicles will receive a sales tax exemption.

Every Green Loan plants a tree!
We have partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation to plant a tree for every Green Loan we open. Trees will go where they're needed most - in a national forest that has been devastated by insects, disease, and wildfires.

 


Here at SMCU, we usually like to think of ourselves as trailblazers. You know, with members voting online to choose our debit card design, or how about that new Feel Good Checking account? But there are some fads that are just too cool to ignore. Yes, we’re hopping on the Green bandwagon. Why not? It’s a win-win proposition. Green practices are better for our members and our community, and they save money and resources.

 

It’s a long road, but we can get there together.
Just like you, we have been making little changes for a long time now. We have switched our newsletter and all of our brochures to recycled, post-consumer paper. Our employees receive great incentives to use public transportation. We retired two large trucks from our small fleet of company vehicles. Our bathrooms are fitted with efficient automatic paper towel dispensers and recycled paper. Every one of our offices has a recycle bin.

Little changes make a big difference, but we know that we can do a lot more. We are setting up a Green Committee to implement initiatives to reduce waste, carbon footprint, and energy use. As we develop ambitious long-term goals we will share them with you, our members. Check back here for our latest ideas and updates on our progress.
