What are the perks of Student Checking?

Free VISA® Debit Card

Most financial institutions will issue only an ATM card to members younger than 16 years old. At SMCU, every student checking account holder receives a VISA® debit card upon opening an account and passing a checking account management quiz. Every day, Student Checking debit card holders can withdraw up to $100 cash, make deposits at any Co-op network ATM, and/or purchase up to $200 worth of merchandise anywhere VISA® is accepted.

Your debit card is just a few steps away:

  • Follow the link to your checking account management quiz. Go to your quiz now.
  • Complete the quiz.
  • You must answer 10 out of 10 questions correctly in order to pass the quiz. There is no limit to the number of attempts you can make.
  • Once you pass the quiz, print out your certificate and bring it to any SMCU branch with your parent or guardian so we can verify your score and order your debit card.

Share Secured Student VISA® Credit Card

Every Student Checking account holder 16 and older is eligible to apply for an SMCU Share Secured VISA® Credit Card (with a co-signing parent or legal guardian). At Seattle Metropolitan Credit Union, we have a commitment to financial education. That's why we want student checking account holders to learn about the importance of responsible credit management while there is still time to ask questions at home, before they go off to college.
